Race Roster now offers timers of events the ability to configure predictive tracking for participants in the race. This feature allows for members of the public to view real-time estimations for when a participant will complete their race. As runners complete individual splits within the course, their estimated finish time will be updated based on their pace from that and/or previous splits, as well as their start time for the race.
To set up live predictive tracking for your event, follow the steps below.
1. From your event dashboard, click on Apps -> Results from the left side menu.
2. From your results dashboard, click Add new race -> Create race to begin setting up the race leaderboard that will be using live predictive tracking.
3. When setting up your race, configure the following fields:
- Give your race leaderboard a name
- The result type must be Structured to use live predictive tracking
- Select the appropriate distance and unit for the race
- Enable scoring if desired (optional)
4. Uploading a race route is optional but strongly recommended to optimize your live predictive tracking display from the participant's results page. Uploading a race route will allow for spectators of a participant's race to view their predicted location along the course as updated times are uploaded. (GPX or KML file types allowed).
5. Next, configure the segments for the race depending on how you would like the live predictive tracking to display. The two options of segment types to create for your results set are:
- Interval
- Cumulative
6. After selecting the segment type, create the individual segments that you would like to include to be tracked within your live predictive tracking display.
7. With splits/segments now in place, the live predictive tracking setting must be enabled from the bottom of the page under the live predictive tracking settings dropdown.
After enabling the live predictive tracking setting, input a gun start time and tracking cut-off time. The gun start time should be set to the start date and time of your in-person race. If your race begins slightly later than expected, it is best practice to adjust the gun start time to the delayed start time to ensure the most accurate predictive tracking (e.g., if the race actually starts at 8:02AM instead of 8:00AM, change your gun start time to 8:02AM to remain accurate).
Note: Any start time-of-day data uploaded in your results will be used during the live predictive tracking process. The gun start time configuration as seen below is used as a back-up in the case your results set doesn't have start time-of-day data included.
You must also select which pace type you’d like our system to use when calculating predictions. The default type, average, will utilize participants’ average pace from all previously completed segments of the same type (run, bike, etc.). This option is best for smoothing out any anomalies like drastic elevation gain differences between segments or instances where the participant may walk or rest at an aid station in a particular segment. Alternatively, you may choose to use participants’ last-completed segment pace for calculations. This option may be best to account for normal consistent slowing throughout the race.
Finally, a tracking landing page is enabled by default. This is a placeholder page that will instruct spectators who visit the results URL early (either before results are available or while a race is still set to ‘private’) to check back shortly to begin the tracking experience. If you intend to keep the race in private mode (and never set it to public during tracking), you may wish to disable this landing page.
8. With segments and live predictive tracking settings in place, the timer of the event can now begin to upload race results to the event as runners continue to cross different splits throughout the course. 9. As the timer uploads new results data for your race with updated split times included, the participant's progress from the uploaded race route map will update on their individual result page. Completed segments will display within the white cards below the race route displaying the runner's split times throughout the course. The predictions for the upcoming splits will appear in the grey cards with estimations on when the runner will complete this segment.
The uploaded race route map will continue to update as new results are processed and begin to fill in with solid blue lines to display that part of the course as being completed by the runner whereas a dashed route represents a runner's predicted (but unconfirmed) progress.
